Q1. Every year the camps have theme days. What is the theme for the camp my child is registered for?

The themes for this year are listed with the individual camps found by clicking here. The campers are sometimes asked to decorate their cabin, create a skit, attend a banquet with these themes in mind, but it is not necessary that you bring something related to the theme.

Q2. What if my child has allergies?

Rideau Hill Camp cannot accommodate campers with known life threatening allergies. However each case will individually be assessed by the camp nurse or the camp nurses supervisor for potential risk. Exceptions to this policy will be made on an individual basis.
Rideau Hill Camp can not guarantee a "Nut Free" environment and does not monitor food products for traces of specific allergens.
Campers requiring an epipen must carry it on their person at all times. Campers that do not bring their epipen will be sent home. They are welcome to come back with the pen.

Q3. Can I pick up my child during camp for an appointment?

If a camper must leave camp during the camp session this must be discussed with the Director during registration. You will need to provide the date and time of pick up and drop off as well as who will be picking up the child. The child must be returned by the bed time of the camp or they will have to wait until the following morning. For the safety of the campers we do not allow visits during week. We need to know who is at camp at all times and where all campers are.

Q4. When do I pick up/ drop off my child?

Campers can be dropped off at camp between 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on the first day of camp and are to be picked up at 11:00 a.m. on the last day. We ask that you be on time for pick up. If you need to arrange for alternatives for this please call the camp Director well in advance to discuss.

Q5. What do I do with any medication my child uses?

All medication, including over the counter (ie. Tylenol, Aspirin) and prescription drugs, asthma inhalers must be given to the camp nurse upon arrival for safe storage and to regulate administration.

Q6. What do I not bring to camp?

We strongly suggest that you do not bring good clothes or shoes to camp that may get dirty, damaged or ruined. There is nothing to buy at camp so money is not needed. Food in cabins attracts unwanted visitors and is not permited. For safety reasons we ask that no aerosol cans be packed. There are no plugins in the cabins so items requiring electrical outlets should be left at home. We ask that all gaming devices and cell phones be left at home. For the protection of privacy, cell phones will be confiscated and held for parents to pick up at the end of camp.
Items which are not be brought to camp and which will result in a child be sent home include: alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, knives and other weapons.

Q7. What if my child requires a special diet (ie. vegetarian, lactose intolerant, gluten free)?

We endeavour to meet your child’s nutritional needs, however specialized diets may require consultation with the camp cook and your provision of specialty foods. Please contact the camp by phone or email if you have more questions.

Q9. My child sometimes wets the bed, what can I do about this when they go to camp?

This is not uncommon considering the age of campers that visit each summer. If your child uses items such as pull ups please send them along. If your child does not want to put them on in the cabin, they can be kept in the nurses cabin where they can visit each night and put them on and the same in the morning for the disposal of them. We ask that you please provide a change of bedding incase one is needed. Please make sure this issue is noted on the health form and speak to the cabin counsellor upon your arrival.

Q10. I want to send my child mail while they are at camp, where do I send it?

Camper mail is welcome. Please remember that we have rural service and mail can take an additional day or two. If mail arrives after the camp session, it will be marked 'return to sender.' To help with this you may wish to write some letters and leave them with the Director when you drop off your child. If it is an item that you wish given to the camper on a given day, such as a birthday present, please indicate this on the package. If you do choose to mail the letters please do not send them to:
Camper Name
c/o Rideau Hill Camp
3560 Rideau River Road,
Manotick, ON
K4M 1B4
This address is only available during the two summer months camp is in session.

Q11. My child has a tendency to get homesick, what can I do about it when they go to camp?

We are familiar with this. To help with this we get the campers involved right from the beginning and keep them active. If they become home sick we work to find things that they enjoy at camp and get them involved. It is very rare that a child goes home due to homesickness. We do not promote calling home. To help with this you may want to send a stamped addressed envelope and paper for each day your child is at camp. They can write down what they did that day or draw a picture, depending on their age and send it home to you.

Q12. What happens at registration?

Camp registration begins at 3:30 p.m. The gates of the camp open shortly before this. There will be camp staff available to help guide you when you arrive. Please remember to bring your completed medical forms. After checking in with the registrar, you will have an opportunity to meet the camp Director and Nurse and discuss any issues or concerns you have with them. You and your child will then meet with the counsellor(s) responsible for their cabin for the week. Once again you can discuss any thing with them and ask questions. You are welcome to stay during registration hour and help you child get unpacked and tour the camp.

Q13. I am coming for the Family Camp. Is there anything special I should know?

The camp does not have items such as high chairs, cribs and booster seats. If your child needs these items please bring them with you. You are able to park you vehicle close to you cabin to make packing and unpacking easier. There are also lots of staff to help out. If you enjoy sitting out at night there are benches in front of the cabin. If you wish something more comfortable please bring them with you. If you bring toys with you we ask that you please put your name on them. There are often duplicates and this will help prevent any confusion.
